If you’ve been too busy buried under your books, here’s a recap of the semester (almost) gone by.
The Instructional Centre opened for classes in September, and is the new home of the management, co-op, and computer and mathematical science programs. The old management wing is now the social sciences building. Daniel Young and Christian Giroux won a $50,000 prize for their sculpture in the new building. Construction also broke on the upcoming Pan Am aquatics facility, scheduled for completion in 2015.
Following UBC’s popular lip dub, U of T filmed its own lip dub in late September. The final product was supposed to release on Nov. 4, but organizers released a statement that said the video would not be released until next year because it’s still in post-production.
On Nov. 1, U of T launched a tri-campus ban on bottled water. Students can no longer purchase bottled water at UTSC. Though the initiative has been favoured, the campus community has expressed concern about the current lack of filling stations and water fountains across campus. The university plans to upgrade existing water fountains and install filling stations in every building.
This semester, the SCSU launched Reach.Connect.Build, an event where student union executives are available in the Meeting Place to talk to students. They also unveiled ‘1 ♥ UTSC’ T- shirts which sold out within hours.
The fourth annual ARTSIDEOUT campus-wide arts festival took place on Oct. 6. The UTSC Drama Society presented their One-Act Showcase from Nov. 17 to 19, featuring diverse one-act plays performed by drama students.
And of course, UTSC knows how to party. Between the SCSU’s All Hands on Deck boat cruise, Halloween pub night, the Latin American Students’ Association’s pub night and the South Asian Alliance’s Fantasy amongst others, students found the perfect balance between books and having a good time.
Until next semester!
