In what appears to be a landslide victory, the self-proclaimed “most approachable” person on campus is now in charge.
The unofficial results are in, and Pagalavan Thavarajah has been elected the new president of your Scarborough Campus Students’ Union.
Thavarajah defeated presidential hopeful Atef Latif by the significant margin of 553-167 votes, according to the unofficial results sent to The Underground on Feb. 19 by residing SCSU President John Aruldason.
Carl Bagot was elected VP Academics by a thin 52 votes, although 237 students marked abstain on their ballots.
Abdalla Al-Baalawy edged out Juila Varshavska 441-334 for VP External, while Zahra Murji cruised to victory with 429 votes for VP Students & Equity.
This was the only category with more than two candidates.
Unfortunately, voter turnout was much lower than expected. There was a large drop-off in numbers even in comparison to the results we saw for last year’s election.
When we look at the plight of people across the world, fighting daily for democracy and free election, it is disappointing to see such an apparent lack of interest displayed by the student body at Scarborough campus.
While the results are yet to be ratified and are therefore not yet official, the remainder of the results, as reported by the SCSU, are as follows.
