Crosby and Ovechkin, the Kane and Toews tandem, the brothers Sedin: the list of NHL stars goes on and on. On the ice, it’s easy to know who reigns superior. Off the ice, stardom is a little harder to recognize. The Underground brings you the top five Canadian NHL players on and off the ice.
5. Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings – A native of London, Ontario, Doughty was drafted second overall in the 2008 entry draft. He played his junior career with the Guelph Storm of Guelph, Ontario and continues to contribute to the community. He purchased a box at the Sleeman Centre which he fills with underprivileged children at each Storm home game. He has helped run hockey schools for children and given plenty of his time to visit children’s hospitals and do autograph signings—all at the age of 20.
4. Luke Schenn, Toronto Maple Leafs – Hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Schenn was drafted fifth overall in 2008. In his rookie year with Toronto, he started a program called “Luke’s Troops” where soldiers and veterans of war can come to a Maple Leafs home game and have a meet and greet with the defenseman before the game. This program has run for every home game of the season. He also makes appearances across the GTA almost every weekend. Schenn is 21.
3. Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks – At the age of 22, Toews is a Stanley Cup champion, has the keys to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and his childhood arena named after him. Believe it or not, he is also the namesake of a lake. All the recognition by his hometown shows how much of a stand-up man Toews is. He has participated in many charity pick-up games and has run hockey schools for children in both Canadian cities and Chicago. He used his day with the Cup to visit children’s hospitals and community centres around his hometown.
2. Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning – Stamkos was drafted first overall in the 2008 draft. His hometown of Unionville, Ontario continues to reap the benefits of his generosity as a minor hockey team was given full head to toe equipment and uniforms for the new season paid for by Stamkos. He also partnered with Vincent Lecavalier (Lightning captain) to help raise funds for youth with cancer. Stamkos has run hockey schools for children in his hometown and in Tampa, all before being legal in the United States. Stamkos is 20-years-old.
1. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins - At 23, no longer a kid like his nickname suggests, Crosby is the pride of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. He has always been recognized for his leadership and community work, doing hospital visits and running hockey schools for children. He has started a program in Pittsburgh where underprivileged kids are given full sets of hockey equipment. He is the first to recognize children at games and throw pucks over the glass to them. The little things he does are what make him the biggest star of the NHL; in a child’s eyes, or an analyst’s.
