Ever tried to get in contact with your city councillor? Good luck, because starting in 2014 they are going to be endangered. Rob Ford wants to cut the size of council from 44 to 22.This wouldn’t be that bad if Ford planned to increase their operating budget to increase the larger ward sizes. But what’s that? Ford wants ‘to stop the gravy train’ and cut spending, looks like your going to spend more hours getting in touch with a councilor than you would trying to get a Rogers customer representative on the phone.
You know all those great festivals and events that happen in Toronto, Luminato, Nuit Blanche, and practically everything else? Start saying sayonara because Ford suggests all these really cool festivals should get funding from other sources, and not from the city. Why is this bad? Toronto promotes its artists and covers a large portion of fees that allows free performing arts events in the city. We might even have to start paying for these events, and frankly it’s probably going to suck.
Remember how hard it was to get that summer job? Well Ford promises to trim down department budgets, which means less job opportunities for students, which means less money which means “oh god how will I pay for this textbook?”
But now for the good news.
Ford has promised to cut taxes, leaving people with a $60 saving by not paying the personal vehicle tax and cutting out the municipal land transfer tax by 2012.
Ford also supports subways and wants the Sheppard subway line extended to Scarborough Town Centre and the SRT converted to a subway, but compared to the other candidates more expansive transit plans, Ford’s is too small.
